SUMMARY:Linking Cultural Traditions & Black Psychology to Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop to provide awareness and understanding of how African cultural traditions and Black Psychology impact mental health through the demonstration of truths surrounding Black/African-centered psychological perspectives supporting mental wellness! We welcome our guest workshop lecturer Dr. Doris Filds\, Ph.D.\, Professor Emeritus\, University of New Mexico\, and keynote speaker\, Dr. Shawn Utsey\, Ph.D.\, Psychologist\, Virginia Commonwealth University.\nDr. Doris Filds\, Ph.D. – Professor Emeritus\, University of New Mexico\nDr. Doris Fields\, Ph.D. is a retired adjunct faculty of the University of New Mexico and misses the exchange of ideas that academic settings offer. She loves exploring ideas; compassion\, respect\, and understanding are key elements in her personal and professional journeys. Her most informative and profound experiences include learning with the venerable Thich Nhat Hahn\, practicing mindfulness. She works to understand how people function within the legacy of historical paradigms and explores ways to use the gifts of one another’s paradigms.\n  \nDr. Shawn Utsey\, Ph.D. Psychologist\, Virginia Commonwealth University\nDr. Utsey’s research interests are primarily in two areas\, both of which are related to the psychology of the African-American experience. First is his interest in understanding how race-related stress impacts the physical\, psychological and social well-being of African-Americans. More recently\, however\, he has sought to examine how trauma is manifested in the victims of racial violence. Other areas of interest include examining the influence of African-American culture (e.g.\, collective social orientation\, spiritual centeredness\, verve\, etc.) on indicators of health and well-being. Dr. Utsey has published numerous journal articles\, book chapters\, and papers\, and presented at professional conferences. Dr. Utsey recently was recognized at the 2004 conference of the American Psychological Association\, Division 45 and APAGS\, for his work in the area of ethnic minority psychology and for his dedication and commitment as a mentor to students of African descent.\nWorkshops on Tuesday\, December 14\, 2021:\nProvider workshop – 2:00pm – 4:00pm MST (2.0 cultural CEU hours are provided for FREE)\nCommunity workshop – 5:00pm – 7:00pm MST\nLearning Objectives\nAwareness of historical African cultural traditions and the relevance to Black/African Americans today .\nUnderstand how Black Psychology evolved which led to Black and African-centered psychological perspectives.\nParticipants will be provided information on cultural traditions and Black Psychology assisting mental health practitioners with skills contributing to cross-cultural counseling with people of Black/African American descent.\n2.0-hour cultural CEUs will be provided for professionals (mental health\, counselors\, social work\, etc.) for the PROVIDER workshop.\nPlease fill out the following form to secure your spot in the workshop and to receive the online meeting information.\nIf you have any questions\, please contact us at Info@NMBLC.org!\nThank you to NM Bernalillo County Behavioral Health Initiatives\, Behavioral Health Training\, and Education Services Grant for supporting these opportunities in our community.
