With comprehensive programming offered by the New Mexico Black Leadership Council\, the camp utilizes visual arts\, movement\, voice\, and drama to teach STEAM principles in a culturally-enriching environment\, while also instilling in the youth pivotal social-emotional learning concepts to ensure they thrive in everything they do. \n \nThe camp will be run from July 11 through July 28\, 2022\, with camp programming from 9 AM to 4 PM. \nBefore care: 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM\nAfter Care: 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM\n \nEach year\, the Roots camp has embraced a theme. With comprehensive programming offered by the New Mexico Black Leadership Council\, the camp utilizes visual arts\, movement\, voice\, and drama to teach STEAM principles in a culturally-enriching environment\, while also instilling in the youth pivotal social-emotional learning concepts to ensure they thrive in everything they do. \n \nThe camp will be run from July 11 through July 28\, 2022\, with camp programming from 9 AM to 4 PM. \nBefore care: 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM\nAfter Care: 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM\n \nEach year\, the Roots camp has embraced a theme. We are happy to share with you all this year’s theme: SAWUBONA\, which means “I SEE YOU SEEING ME” in traditional Zulu culture. Every discipline covered in the camp utilizes this theme to create the curriculum. Learn more about Sawubona \n\nLastly\, the youth who participate will have the opportunity to perform in the culminating capstone program\, The Harambee Celebration. This presentation will allow all youth in the program to demonstrate the skills developed in the camp in a grand performance held right at the First Unitarian Church.\n\nSEE WHAT LAST YEAR’S PARTICIPANTS ARE SAYING: \n\n\n\n\nRegistration Deadline: JUNE 30

DESCRIPTION:Kumbuka means “To Remember”…Our beloved community member Michael Herndon – musician extraordinaire\, culinary genius\, husband\, father\, brother\, loyal friend\, mentor\, and Star Wars enthusiast completed his earthly assignment on December 11\, 2021.\nM4 will be a four-dimensional multimedia extravaganza to celebrate Michael\, his musings\, his melodies\, and our memories.  We have limited in-person seating (registration/ticket required and proof of vaccination is needed at the door).  2022 Kumbuka Celebration will also be streamed live for those who cannot physically be in the room where it happens.\nJoin us for a celebration worthy of Michael’s huge impact on our lives here in New Mexico.\nThere’s a veritable Who’s Who of New Mexico’s finest musicians and spoken word artists who will be on hand to celebrate Michael’s life and legacy. Join us in this online event to learn about her African American Miniature Museum and artistic process. You’ll also have a chance to ask questions and learn about key historical events and people.\nKaren is a self-taught “miniaturist” — a creator of small objects — who for the last 24 years has honed her craft in her home studio located in Compton\, California. She will be joining us via Zoom from her home\, where she will be surrounded by many of her artworks and will select a few to present and teach through them. The event is family-friendly as Karen specializes in teaching schoolchildren K-12.
