SUMMARY:We Come From Strong People: A Chat with Karen Collins | Hosted by The University of New Mexico and Maxwell Museum of Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:Join Founder and Executive Director of the African American Miniature Museum\, Karen Collins\, for a discussion on Black origins in honor of Black History Month.\nFor decades\, artist and educator Karen Collins has been creating historical dioramas and sharing them to bring clarity and vibrance in the telling of Black history. Join us in this online event to learn about her African American Miniature Museum and artistic process. You’ll also have a chance to ask questions and learn about key historical events and people.\nKaren is a self-taught “miniaturist” — a creator of small objects — who for the last 24 years has honed her craft in her home studio located in Compton\, California. She will be joining us via Zoom from her home\, where she will be surrounded by many of her artworks and will select a few to present and teach through them. The event is family-friendly as Karen specializes in teaching schoolchildren K-12.
