Dr. Doris Filds, Ph.D. – Professor Emeritus, University of New Mexico
Dr. Doris Fields, Ph.D. is a retired adjunct faculty of the University of New Mexico and misses the exchange of ideas that academic settings offer. She loves exploring ideas; compassion, respect, and understanding are key elements in her personal and professional journeys. Her most informative and profound experiences include learning with the venerable Thich Nhat Hahn, practicing mindfulness. She works to understand how people function within the legacy of historical paradigms and explores ways to use the gifts of one another’s paradigms.

Dr. Shawn Utsey, Ph.D. Psychologist, Virginia Commonwealth University
Dr. Utsey’s research interests are primarily in two areas, both of which are related to the psychology of the African-American experience. First is his interest in understanding how race-related stress impacts the physical, psychological and social well-being of African-Americans. More recently, however, he has sought to examine how trauma is manifested in the victims of racial violence. Other areas of interest include examining the influence of African-American culture (e.g., collective social orientation, spiritual centeredness, verve, etc.) on indicators of health and well-being. Dr. Utsey has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and papers, and presented at professional conferences. Dr. Utsey recently was recognized at the 2004 conference of the American Psychological Association, Division 45 and APAGS, for his work in the area of ethnic minority psychology and for his dedication and commitment as a mentor to students of African descent.
